With reference to r. Marcourt's Confidential

Despatch of the 23rd. of April, I have the honour to transit the enclosed copy of correspondence with the Military Authorities on the subject of the incidence of the cost of enemy subjects intern-

-ed in this Colony.

The total claim is £4,356. 5 1 ond is exclusive of the charges for 76 ilitary prisoners brought here

from Tsingtau.

3.

I am of opinion that the Colony can afford and would be glad to defray the whole cost of all four categories of prisoners mentioned in the Colonial Secretary's letter of the 2nd. of September and if you wish it I will ask the Legislative Council to vote the necessary expenditure.

4.

As the Military Authorities are anvious for prompt payment I shall be glad to learn your decision by telegraph.
