Referring to Kr. Harcourt's Despatch No.'lol of

the 17th. April, I have the honour to recommend that opportunity should be taken of the retirement of Dr. G. G. Burnett to substitute for the Senior Clerk, General Post Office, an Officer to be named

Inspector of Postimen.

As stated in the second paragraph of my Despatchí

No 141 of the 23rd. April a officer is required to superintend the Chinese postmen, and with the merel increase in postal work and the opening of branch post offices in various parts of the Colmy active outdoor supervision and inspection has become more and

more necessary.

I enclose a list of the duties which it is pro- -posed to as im to the Inspector. At the present time the prst is temporarily filled by a Lance 3ergeant of Police, who is also employed under the Treasury Department to enforce the proper stuping of receipts and other documents requiring revenue stapps. His emoluments are as follows:-

Salary as Lunce Sergeant 2140 and conveyance allowance $240 per annum, paid in equal shares from Treasury and Post Office funds; special allowance 1,440 per annum, paid from Post Office funde; free quarters in Police

Barracks.
