Capetown.

A scheme prepared in August, 1912. and submitted to, and approved by,

the

Government provides for the following scheme of improvement:

(1) Creation of two berths at the existing No. 2 jetty in the Victoria basin, 640 ft. long and with a depth of 36 ft. (L.W.0.8.T.). (2) Creation of two berths at the existing No. 3 jetty in the Victoria Basin, 680 ft. long and with depth of 38 ft. (L.W.0.8.T.). (8) Construction of a new berth outside the present East Pier, 786 ft. long and with a depth of 40 ft. (L,W.0.8.T.).

(4) Construction of several addi-

tional deep water berths in a new basin to the anat of the Victoria Basin with a depth of 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.). The entrance to this basin will be 300 ft. wide. The whole scheme is estimated to cost

Durban.

Reclamation of 60 sores of land at Congella has been started, and it is proposed to provide accommodation there for deep draught vessels. The full scheme contemplates

(1) Berthage for 12 ships (on the bay principle)each berth to be 700 ft. in length.

(2) One long berth on the old quay wall, 1,800 ft. in length.

(3) A further berth in the vicinity

of the graving dock.

(4) A graving dock of the following

It is intended to dredge each of the bays to 40 t. (L.W.0.8.T.) at the commencement, but to dredge the re- mainder of the new work, and the channel, as the shipping requires it. The whole sabeme (exclusive of the graving dook) is estimated to cost 2,000,000, and the graving dook sa additional 750,000/

East London (Buffalo Harbour).

Approval has already been given to the expenditure of 160,000 on improvements to the harbour, viz., 150,0002 for extending the south breakwater and 10,000l. for removing the submerged rock (for which ada answer to question 1). Further works estimated to coat 360,0007, are still awaiting sanction. They consist of (a) the extension of the south breakwater for a further 500 ft., (b) the construction of a new enat breakwater, (a) the removal of the present east pier and of the remains of the wreck Lucy."

Port Elizabeth (Algoa Bay).

A scheme has been submitted to the Railway Board for enclosing the port with breakwater to the south, .., from the end of the Dom Pedro Jetty. It is proposed as a first instalment to add 1.000 to 1,500 ft. of breakwater, which will bring it out to a depth of 36 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) and subsequently to bring the breakwater round to an angle towards the north, in order to shelter the present jetties. The estimated cost of the break- water is 1,300,0008.
