11. (1) Can the depth of water (a) at the entrance and in the approach
channel-
(b) in the case of en- closed docks, at the entrance lock, if; any, of any impor- tant dock or docks
(c) at the principal,
bertha-
be deepened to 40 feet at L.W.0.3.T. (in the case of the berths at enclosed docks, H.W.O.N.T.), and can accommodation be pro- vided for vessels 1,000 feet. in length, and of 100 feet beam?
If not, to what extent can deepening be effected, and for vessels of what dimensions (length, draught, and beam at that draught) can accommoda- tion be provided ?
(2) In what period? (8) At what approximate
cost-
for the entrance and approach channel?
(b) in the case of on- olosed docks for the entrance lock. if any, of such impor- tant dock or docks? (c) for the principal
berths ?
It would not be practicable to deepen the present entrance to the Victoria Basin to 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.), though the canting basin is now being dredged to that depth. The deepening works now in progree or contemplation are described in answer to question 13.
The channel can be deepened to 40 ft.
(L.W.O.S.T.1 and the berth with 38 ft. 6 ins. (L.W.O.S.T.) can be deepened similarly, but not any other of the existing berths. Accommodation could be provided for ships 1,000 ft. in length and of 100 ft. beam. To deepen the channel and the berth above referred to would take approxi- mately 3 years and cost 50,0007.
It would be possible to deepen the bar and approach channel to 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.), but at present ships 1,000 ft. in length and of 100 ft. beam cannot be turned, and it would be expensive to secure an adequate turning basin for large ships. To deepen to 40 ft. (L.W.0.8.T.) would take 10 to 15
years and cost approximately 1,000,0001
If a breakwater is provided there will be almost un- limited accommodation for vessels of any size. (See answer to question 13.)
12. What extra charges for
the maintenance-
(a) of the entrance and
approach channel,
(b) in the case of en- closed docks, of the entrance lock, if any, to such important dock or docks,
(c) of the principal
berthe-
would be involved as a result of these improve- ments?
Note. Where detailed es- timates have not already been prepared only approximate fig ures are desired.)
The extra charges for maintenance
would not be great, and are estimated
#t
The extra maintenance charges on account of deepen-
ing to 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) would be considerable, but no thorough estimates have been made out.
Considerable extra expenditure would be incurred in maintenance of the wharves, as deepening could only be done by extending the existing wharves into deeper
water.
