(a) at the entrance and in the approach channel.
Deepening the channel and berths to a depth of 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) is out of the question, as it would mean reconstruction of the quays and widen. ing the river along banks which to s large extent are permanently occupied by private enterprise.

be deepened to 40 feet at L.W.0.3.T. (in the case of the berths at enclosed docks, H.W.O.N.T.), and can accommodation be pro- vided for vessels 1,000 feet in length, and of 100 feet beam ?
If not, to what extent can deepening be effected, and for vessels of what dimensions (length, draught, and beam at that draught) can accommoda- tion be provided?

depth of 30 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) is, anticipated. Even with this depth; all existing quays would require renewal, except the modern ones already giving 28 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) and referred to in answer to questions 4 and 5, which could be made to stand 30 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.).
At two of these quays the lengths are sufficient to berth vessels of 1,000 ft. and of 100 ft. beam.
The new works authorised and projected are referred to in answer to ques- tion 18.
Such depth is unnecessary, having regard to the rise of tide, which provides a depth of over 40 ft. for most of the 24 hours.
Vessels 1,000 ft. in length and of 100 ft. bean can be accommodated already. both at the landing stage and in the Gladstone Dock.
As an engineering possibility the channel in the Thames could be deepened to 40 ft. (L.W.0.8.T.) for a considemble fistance beyond Tilbury, but the expense involved doen not encourage the Port of Loudon Authority to attempt such su improvement. The channel is now being deepened to 30 ft. (L.W.0.S.T.) up to the Royal Albert Dock, and as this will give a depth of from ft. (H.W.0.N.T.) to fc. (H.W.0.8.T.) sufficient depth of water to dock vessels requiring a depth of 40 ft. will exist. None of the new dock Levommodation under construction is designed to admit vessels of a length of 1,000 ft., and of 100 ft. beam, but the scheme to be eventually carried out for the extension of Tilbury Dock does provide for such vessels. This scheme is described in answer to question 13.
The depth of water in the channel could be deepened to 40. (L.W.0.8.T.) in approximately two years at a cost of 200,000 to 300,000Z. The White Star Dock alady provides accommodation for ships of the dimensions auggested.
13. What extra charges for
the maintenance--
(a) of the entrance and
approach channel,
(b) in the case of en- closed docke, of the entrance lock, if any, to such important dock or docks. (c) of
the principal barthe- would be involved as a
result of these improve ments?
(Note Where detailed es- timates have not already been prepared only approximate ig- ures are desired.}
The present charges for maintenance would be increased in respect of dredging, were berth accommodation to be formed to give 30 ft. depth (L.W.O.S.T.). These barths, however, would not be reserved for vessale of 1,000 ft. in length, but would be available for aborter ones. The in creased cost of the works would. therefore, not be due to providing ' for vessels 1,000 ft. in length alone.
The cost of maintaining the channel at present depth has averaged for the last three years 47,300 per annum. To get a greater depth than at present in the channel it is proposed -
(a) to construct training banka to
improve the Crosby Channel.
(6) That the dredging plant be concentrated on the deepen. ing of the channel from the western end of the curve of the Askew Spit to the bar.
See answer to question 11,
So far as the channel is concerned it is thought that the extra expense of maintenance would not be great.
