GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 7th. August, 1915. 380

Sir,

Sor

Referring to my Confidential Despatch of the 38648 16th. July, I have the honour to report that an examination of the fourteen Indians who travelled by the S. S. "Mongolia" revealed no suspicious circumstances. They were all apparently of the labouring class, they had no arme or other incriminating articles, and they behaved well. Four had been deported from the United States of Americe for contravention of the immigration laws, and the remaind- -er were returning home in the ordinary course. They were sent on to Calcutta on the 29th. July, and particulara necessary for their identification were sent to the Government of India by telegram. With reference to your telegram of the 17th.

2.

July, a paraphrase of which is enclosed, no information is as yet forthcoming with regard to the persons mentioned or the alleged chartering of a schooner. The Consul-General for the Netherlands, who is a man of discretion and well disposed towards the allied cause, has been asked to make enquiry quietly, and to inform this Government if anything transpires.

3.

It appears to have been incorrectly stated in my telegram of the 15th. July that Mrs. Cook was with the party on board the S. S. "Mongolia" as her name was not in the passenger

list.

Information has been received from a Mr.
