Your letter of the lst. instant was laid before the Council of the University of Hongkong at its meeting this merning and the Council unanimously passed the following resolution which I am directed to communicate to you.
Resolved:-
That the Council of the University of Hongkong pass a unanimous vote of sincere thanks to lir. Loke Yew for his most generous loan of half a million dollare and at the same time record their sense of the bene-
-fit which he has conferred on the University by
giving them the means of placing its finances on a
secured basis and increasing its activity and use-
-fulness.
The Senate, representing the teaching staff of the University also desire to express their gratitude for
your munificmce and their appreciation of the great services which you have rendered to the cause of higher education in
Hongkong.
The University has hitherto laboured under the
difficulty that it depended largely on temporary benefactions view which expire in a few years, but the Senate and the
Council both feel that, if you concur in the proposals suggest
-ed in my so companying letter for using the funds which you have so generously placed at our disposal, these difficulties will be removed ad that there is every hope that our financial position will in future be satisfactory.
I am etc..
