With reference to my Confidential Despatches of
the 5th. June and the 2nd. Jdly, I have the honour to inform you
that Mr. Ainscough returned to Hongkong recently from Yunnan. I
find that he is travelling to England via America and does not
expect to arrive until about the end of September or early in
October.

The accounts of Messrs. Melchers have been
examined by Mr. Sayer. The profits revealed are quite normal and
there is no evidence of any assistance having been received from
the Germm Government. Enquiry is still being made into the affairs of Messrs. Carlowitz and Company..

In connection with the whole question I have
had the privilege of reading the interesting and valuable report made by Mr. Ainscough to the Board of Trade dated the 10th. March.
This report contains no evidence of any subsidies having been granted to Hongkong firms by the German Government. The report has probably been sent to you by the Board of Trade, but in case this has not been done lir. Ainscough is requesting that department to forward a copy to you. As Mr. Ainscough has reported so fully on
