GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG, 18th. June, 1915.

In continuation of my Confidential Despatch of the 5th. instant, I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your code telegram of the thInstant, copy enclosed, and to

confirm my reply, copy enclosed, of the 10th. June in sending which

I regret that I did not appreciate the fact that Mr. Cheetham

contemplated appointing Mr. Schlüter as his sub-agent in Canton. I

526875 have also to acknowledge your code telegram of the 12th. instant,

copy enclosed, and to confirm my reply of the 16th. instant, copy

Gr. 27685- of which is also enclosed.

2.

In accordance with your instructions con-

(975)

-tained in your telegram of the 12th. instant I caused the letter

copy of which is enclosed, to be addressed to Messrs. Johnson,

Stakes and Master and on the 16th. instant I heard Mr. Cheetham

in his defence. Mr. Cheetham was accompanied by his Solicitor. The

Colonial Secretary and Attorney-General were present.

conducted himself in a straightforward manner which created a good impression, was that while Messrs. Reuter Brockelmann might no

doubt entertain hopes to regain after the war the agency for Hong-

-kong and South China of the Texas Oil Company, they had at

present no interest in the agency whatever. To prove this he referred to a letter, copy enclosed, from Mr. Stegar the former Head of the Branch of Lessrs. Reuter Bröckelmann in Hongkong and
