of the Clerks equally affected the Interpreters and Transla-
tore Your Petitioners applied to His Excellency the Governor
for the same treatment, and were informed in July, 1914,
that the new scales of salaries would be extended to them
from 1st January, 1915, but that their previous service in
the same grade was not to count for incrementa.

Considering the great difference in the dates of
commencement of the increases as granted to the Clerks and
to the members of the Interpretation Sub-Department, notwith
-standing the similarity of the scales and of the ground
upon which the increases were granted, Your Petitioners re-
quested the Government to allow them the same privileges
regarding the date of commencement of the new scales and the'
reckoning of previous service for increments, as were extend
-ed to the Clerks; but were informed that their request
could not be acceded to. In view of this adverse decision
Your Petitioners are constrained to submit this humble
petition for your consideration in the hope that justice
would be shown them.

5. As an instance of the difference mentioned in the
foregoing paragraph, Your Petitioners beg to state that if
the members of the Interpretation Sub-Department were placed
on the same basis as the Clerks regarding these increases of
pay, Your Petitioner Wong Kwong Tin in addition to receiving

2 years back increment (January 1913 December 1914),
would now be drawing $230 a month instead of $220 as at
present, and would have an increment of $10 a month in
September next instead of having to wait till January 1917;
and Your Petitioner Wong Tak Kwong would, in addition to the
two years back increment, now be drawing $180 a month
