The Governor of Hong Kong to the Secretary of State
for the Colonies.
(Received Colonial Office, 10,50 a.m. 6th April,1915)
April 6th On behalf of whole Chinese commercial
commmunity of Hong Kong the Chinese members of the Legislative Council have requested me to make to His
Vajesty's Government the following urgent representa-
tions: Firstly that the demands made upon China
by Japan are subversive of the principles of equal
opportunities of trade and of the maintenance of the
integrity of China. Secondly that, if Japan is
allowed to succeed in impo: ing her will on China,
British influence and prestige in Chins will be
seriously damaged. Thirdly that the designs of Japan
in Asia are of the same nature as those which Germany
is attempting to prosecute on the Continent of Europe,
The Chinese community in Hong Kong therefore invokes
for China the assistance of His Majesty's Government.
MAY.
