With reference to your letter marked confidential of the 20th. February, I am directed to inform you that the woman referred to by you Pun Mei Lan (1) duly arrived in Hong- -kong with two cheques, one for $750 and one for $150, signed by Mr. Clausen drawn on the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank here.

After making careful enquiries into the work of the Kieler Mission, and perusing your report dated the 11th. December last containing references to the mission, His Excel- -lency the Governor authorised the cashing of the cheques by the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, which is liquidating the Deutsch- Asiatische Bank. The sum of $850 represented all the money belonging to the Kieler Mission in Hongkong, and although Mrs. Pun admitted that at the instigation of the German Consul at Pak- -hoi the mission had inserted some references to the war from the German point of view in their magazine, His Excellency did not consider it necessary to withhold the money which was apparently needed for the maintenance of the orphans and teachers in their
schools.
