This shall be immediately followed by compacting with a steam roller weighing from 175 to 200 pounds per inch width of tire. The steam rolling shall be done by first rolling across the roadway at right angles to its direction, then crossing diagonally first from one side and then from the other, the direction of the two diagonal roll- -ings being approximately at right angles to each other, and finally by rolling parallel with the direction of the road.

The rolling with the steam roller shall be continued for at least

5 hours for every 1,000 square yards of surface.

Such portions of the wearing surface as it may be impossible to roll shall be thoroughly rammed with hot tampers smoothed with hot smoothing irons, care being taken to not burn the surface.

9. The finished surface shall be smooth and conform to the prescribed finished surface of the roadway. When a straight edge ten feet long

is laid on then finished surface, parallel to the line of the street, the surface shall in no place vary more than " from the same. Through- -out the work a template shall be used to secure the proper camber. 10. As soon after the completion of the wearing course as is practic- -able, a seal coat of the same asphaltic material at a temperature of from 150°C. to 175°C. shall be spread evenly over the surface with hand

foundation is wet.

NOTE. Gravel may be substituted for crushed stone if necessary.

Crushed stone is preferable on account of its keying properties.
