GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG 3rd. March, 1915.

Sir,

I have the honour to inform you that Mr. Ho Tung has generously given an endowment of 850,000 to the Hongkong University on condition that out of the annual interest accruing from that capital sum not less than $2,000 be devoted to the endowment of a chair of Clinical Surgery at the Government Civi 1 Hospital; and has in addition given a subscription of $5,000 towards the general expenses of the University and has promised to continue such subscription for 9 more years.

2.

These munificent offers have been gratefully accepted by the University Authorities who have nominated lir. E.

L. Martyn Lobb, M.S., FR.C.S., to be incumbent of the Chair

referred to above.

Mr. Martyn Lobb has for some months past been lecturing in Clinical Surgery at the Government Civil Hospital without remuneration. He is reputed to be the most skilful surgeon in the Colony and has the gift of teaching and an excellent

manner with Chinese.

The effect of his work has already been felt

in two students who had failed last autumn in the examination for their Medical degree (owing to want of practical knowledge) recent- -ly passing that examination.
