London Feb., 23,9.20 p.m.
The Press Bureau issues the following statement;-
Owing to jealousy over recent promotions, a portion of
the 5th. Light Infantry, late 5th. Bengal Infantry, stationed at Singapore, refused to obey orders, thus causing a serious riot.
The disturbance was quelled by the local forces assisted
by detachments landed from the British and allied warships.
The casulaties were:- Killed; six officers, fourteen
British soldiers and fourteen civilians. Wounded Nine British
soldiers.
Some of the rioters were killed and a large number either
surrendered or were captured.
There was no destruction of property and all is now
quiet.
A message from Tokio reports that men from Japanese and
French warships assisted to quell the Singapore riot and some of the Japanese were wounded.
