With reference to my Despatch No. 377 of
the 25th. November, I have the honour to inform you that the
selection of a successor to Mr. J. W. Lee-Jones in the post of
Deputy Registrar and Accountant, Supreme Court, has received my careful consideration. I had hoped that it might be possible to abolish the post, but after consulting Mr. J. H. Kemp, whose substantive post is that of Crow Solicitor, and Mr. Wakeman who
has experience of the work of Registrar of the Supreme Court,
and in view of the probable increase of work which will be
entailed by impending fresh legislation to deal with Probate
and the present necessity for giving assistance to the
Official Receiver owing to the large number of Chinese bankrupt-
-cies, I came to the conclusion that the reduction in
establishment is not advisable.

Chiness
Mr. Kemp and Hr. Wakeman, copy of whose
report I enclose, consider that a Solicitor should be appointed
to the vacancy. I consider, however, that a knowledge of the A language is an indispensable qualification in this Colony in an officer who has to deal with bankruptcy work. It is moreover
