We beg to say that there is at present time no

Lancashireman in the Colony of Hongkong more qualified

than Mr. Backhouse; and it is for this reason that he has

been able to build up, in conjunction with our Manchester

house, a business in Lancashire and Torkshire piece goods,

amounting to more than £100,000 a year, and that we would

like you to propose that the appointment of Messrs. Wicking

be transferred to Mr. Backhouse, Perhaps a cable to the

Hongkong Government is advisable ?

Justified as the action of the Hongkong Government is,

if we are to go by what one is told on this side, yet His

Excellency the Governor cannot wish Lancashire trade to

British manufacturer and merchant by this commerce destroy-

ing war.

our le ter of the 4th in so far as it relates to the :

Authority to dispose at liquidators' discretion of unsold

goods in which we may be interested,- as we cannot until

further enquiry entrust Messrs. Harry Wicking & Co. with

such discretion.

(quotation enda)

In consultation with our friends, we were however

given good reasons why they, as a Bank, did not think it ad-

visable to interfere in this matter. They advised us that

we should cable to Your Excellency's Government the suggestion

of our Lancashire friends and ourselves, which we ventured to do.

Your Excellency was good enough to telegraph in

reply as follows:
