CONFIDENTIAL.
To the Right Honourable
Lewis Vernon Harcourt M.P.
Etc. etc. etc.
sir

Rey of 22 Fale. 6-
Gobernment House.
9th January 1915.
!
On December 28th 1914 I took the liberty of sending to you the 5173/4 cypher telegram of which a paraphrase is attached; and I have now
the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your cypher telegram of
December 31st and to confirm my reply of January 4th. Paraphrases
of both these messages are enclosed,
Gov.

2. Brigadier General Barnardiston was at the time my guest at
Government House, and he desired me to tender his humble duty and
to express his grateful appreciation of Their Kajesties' kindness.
Their Majesties' gracious message was conveyed by the General
Officer Commanding to the officers and men of the half battalion
of the 36th Sikhs, at present here from Kiachow en route to East
Africa, and to a few sick and wounded of the South Wales Borderers
who were in Hospital: and they too were deeply sensible of Their
Kajesties' gracious remebrance of them.
3. My reason for troubling you with a telegram in this matter
is to be found in the wording of the message received by the Commodore
(copy enclosed) in accordance with which Their Kajesties' gracious
greetings were conveyed to the whole of the Navy at Hong Kong, and
not only to that part of it which had assisted at the operations at
Kiaochow. The consequence was that not only the troops who took
part in these operations, but also the garrison of this Colony -
who have undergone much exposure and discomfort during the last five
months of active service conditions experienced a sense of dis-
-
appointment.
I have the honour to be
Sir
Your most obedient humble servant
Anay
GOVERNOR Wed
