I thank you for your letter of the 19th October

and I much appreciate Mr. Harcourt's statement that he recognises the industry and professional ability which I have shown in the performance of my duties,

2.

At the same time I feel it necessary to protest against the Governor'e statement that the difficulties were enhanced by the attitude which I adopted, not only towards the Architects (who are stated to have made no complaints against other members of the staff) but also towards the Director of Public Works for whom I am supposed to have con- ceived a dislike.

I have had no opportunity of perusing the Govern- or's report, but I assume that the facts set out in my letter to you of the 30th January are undisputed and indeed

I know them to be absolutely true and unanswerable.

So far as my attitude towards the Architects is

concerned, it is I conclude admitted that I had considerable

reason for complaint owing to the faulty plans and drawings

supplied by the Architects, and I would remark that these

drawings were kept by Mr Chatham in his Office for a period

of two years and two months during the actual progress of

the superstructure before he made any move in the matter.

I am not aware that beyond doing my best to carry

the matter through without delay and to get proper and work-

able plans instead of the faulty plans and drawings supplied
