ROOF. With respect to the drawings of the
roof, these were asked for by me in December 1903,
and April 1904, but it was not until the 30th August
1906 that the drawings were submitted by the
Architects.

Upon receipt of the drawings I dealt with
the matter within a few days, and pointed out the
extravagent and extraordinary construction proposed
by the Architects. Yet this matter was with Mr.
Chatham for 2 years and 2 months before action was
taken; in the meanwhile the building was progress-
ing and I was still in doubt as to where the various
loads would eventually be placed.
It was not until the 28th October, 1908 that
the Architects were requested by Mr. Chatham to
prepare amended drawings, and a plan was submitted
dated the 12th November, 1908.
The details of roof trusses
such as they
were were received by me on the 27th February, 1909.
As regards these steel roof trusses, it was
pointed out to Mr. Chatham that the Architects were
not working to instructions as regards stresses,
yet no action was taken, and the trusses were duly made after the guiding dimensions had been corrected by me to suit the actual span and the height of the
roof.
Certain of the trusses afterwarda had to be
dissected and strengthened during April, 1910, in
consequence of the fact that the Architects were
