My client explained that it was best to make shipment in that way, as the Opium was subject to pilferage on a large scale by the coolies at places of transshipment in the East. As the Opium and Morphia represented in weight only a relatively small part of the shipment, I did not object. Payment was to be made in the usual way with this client, viz; through 30 d/s draft against documents, à/p.
After the shipment had left me, I was informed that Opium is not allowed to be imported into China from Europe, and consequently I wrote you immediately asking you to get the goods stopped at Hongkong at once and shipped back to London, and thence to Copenhagen. The B/L was still in my hands, as the shipment from London had just been made, and therefore it was possible for you to get the Shipping Company to recall the goods, by wire.
I admit, it is a fault of mine to ship out these goods without making sure that there is no restriction in their importation, but it must be considered to me excuse that the goods were recalled by wire only a few days after the Steamer had left London, viz: as soon as I had received reliable information about the existing restriction regarding their importation.
You will be able to testify this, and I trust that you will give me your kind assistance in getting back the goods, considering all these circumstances. The goods represent a fairly large value, and naturally I am not inclined to lose same, as I can sell the goods in Europe with only a small loss.
Please now give my protest and this frank explanation of facts to the Shipping Company, and advise me.
