LONDON, S.W.

Sir,

October 27th, 1914.

In reply to your letter of the 20th inst. (38302/1914) on the subject of fumigation by the Clayton

apparatus as applied to dwellings, information on which

is desired by the Governor of Hong Kong, I have the honour

to send such information as I have been able to obtain, viz.

(1) Typed abstracta, a printed sheet and two pamph- lets from the Clayton Fire Extinguishing and Ventilating

Company, Ltd.

(2) Typed extracts from "A Treatise on Plague" by

Professor W. G. Simpson.

(3) Typed extract from "Sanitation in India" by

Dr. J. A. Turner.

(4) A typed extract from a letter received by me

from Colonel King, 1.M.S. ret., formerly Sanitary Commis-

sioner, Madras, who has had a large practical experience of

plague prophylaxis.

It will be seen that neither Colonel King's

opinion nor that of Dr. Turner is very favourable to the

Clayton process for disinfection of houses, especially if

I hope that these extracts will meet the

ill constructed.

Governor's wants.

I have the honour to be,

sir,

Your obedient servant,

Arter
