The Incorporated Chamber of Commerce of Liverpool.
BRITISH UNIVERSITY FOR CHINA.
I
To the Rr. HON. DAVID LLOYD GEORGE, M.P.,
H.M. CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER.
THE MEMORIAL OF THE INCORPORATED CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF Liverpool,
Humbly sheweth,
1. That your Memorialists are deeply interested in trade between this Country and China, and desire to see the facilities for that trade extended, especially as British Interests in China far surpass those of any other Country.
2. As China is one of the best customers of Great Britain, and a vast amount of British Capital is invested there, it is very necessary that all possible steps should be taken to improve trade relations between this Country and China.
3. It is felt that the establishment of a British University in China, which would influence the student class, who will control the destinies of China in the future, would be of the greatest value in improving the relations between that Country and the British Empire.
4Your Memorialists understand that you have been made fully conversant with details with regard to the necessity for such a scheme, and the influential support that it has received from statesmen, officials connected with China, and many Chambers of Commerce.
5.-Your Memorialists therefore respectfully pray that a sum of £250,000 may be allocated from the amount of the Boxer Indemnity due to Great Britain, for the purpose of the establishment of a British University at Hankow or any other suitable centre in China.
And your Memorialists will ever pray, &c.
Given under the Common Seal of The Incorporated Chamber of Commerce of Liverpool, this and day of May, 1914.
President DERBY.
Secretary A. H. MILNE.
