sir,
...
Imperial Institute, 5.
March 3rd, 1914.
In further reference to the letter from the Department of February the 18th last, the Committee have pleasure in recom- mending Hiss S. Astin to the Secretary of State as a suitable can- didate for appointment to the vacancy on the private Nursing Staff in the Hong Kong Medical Department, caused by the resignation of Miss H.M. Gourley.
Miss Astin has been known to the Committee since 1909,
when her name was placed on the books. In the following year she
was selected by them for the post of private nurse in Singapore,
where she completed a three years agreement in 1913. The reports
received on her work and conduct during these three years were quite
satisfactory.
Since her return to England Miss Astin was granted a
three months' Post Graduate Course at Guy's Hospital, to bring her
up to date in the latest Hospital methods.
I beg to enclose herewith her application form and
papers, and to say that she will be prepared to leave England when
desired.

Colonial Office,
