Sir:

in contimation of my despatch No. 4 of lovember 4th

and with special reference to your telegram No. 24 of

November 6th on the subject of supposed personification

by British subjects of German firms, 1 would explain that

the two nw firms which have established themselves in

Canton are essentially British.

The case of ".A. Hannibɛl and Company, the head of

which was formerly with Wendt and Company, was fully

investigated by the Hongkong Government, and it was

proved to the satisfuction of the later that it ia in no

sense German.

As to Charles Rayner he is a British subject, who for-

merly represented Carlowitz and Company in Tientsin. He

retired from that firm nome time ago leaving most of his

savings invested in their business. These he cannot now of

course
