continues to occupy the Consulate. Leaseholders of

British premises have vacated them, some without paying

rent for the unexpired period of their leases, others

tandering one half of the sums due. Certain large property

owner's such as Carlowitz und Company and Melchers and

Company, have vacated their buildings and sarry on

business on lonam. One firm

Jebsen and Company, has

dissociated itself from the rest, and two, hose local

representatives are British subjects, are carrying on

business as usual. Owing to its commitments to British

banks the firm of Arnhold Karberg and Company remine

in situ. Of the enemy subjects forced to leave Hongkong

none, so far as I am aware, have come to Canton.

With the exception of small shipments to the United St

States America, local German business is confined to the

delivery of stocks in hand and the collection of outstand-

ing accounts.

It is difficult to gange the effect on the Chinese

mind of this voluntary migration, the only published

comment thereon which has come to my notice being a

paragraph.
