With reference to your letter of the 9th instant res-
pecting the duties and strength of the British troops in
China, I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to tranmit
to you herewith a copy of a telegram from His Majesty'a
Ministr at Peking, with regard to the proposed reduction
of the Hongkong garrison.
In view of the modification of the opinion previously
expressed by Sir J. Jordan on this subject Sir E. Grey is
prepared to concur in the Governor of Hongkong*■ recent
suggestion that the garrison should be reduced by one
Indian battalion and four guns.
With respect to the British troops in North China,
further commumication will be addressed to you in due course.
