With reference to the letter from this Office of the

19th ultimo concerning the recent piracy of the "Tai-on"

I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit to you

herewith copy of a letter from the Nestle and Anglo-Swiss

Condensed Milk Company respecting losses sustained by them

as a result of the attack on this vessel.

Sir E. Grey is of opinion that claims in respect of

such losses should in any case be put forward by the

Company's branch at Hongkong. It appears to him, however,

that the case is somewhat similar to the previous attack

on the "Tai-on" where it was decided that, the pirates

having enbarked on the vessel with their arms in Hongkong

territory, no claim for compensation would lie against the

Chinese Government. His Majesty's Minister at Peking is

being consulted on this point.

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
