to the length of time ich has elapsed since the original
sentence was pronounced as well as to the fact that the
prisoner has already been respited for three months in order
to prosecute his appeal in forma pauperis before the highest
Imperial Court. He would therefore be inclined to suggest
that, though the crime appears to have been a very callous
one and should be met with a severe sentence, public feeling
would be revolted if the death, penalty were now carried
into effect. In view of these circumstances he thinks it
not unlikely that the Governor of longkong, on considering
the case, may think it desirable in the first instance to
commute the death sentence to one of penal servitude for life.
