CONDITIONS OF SERVICE IN THE HONG KONG
POLICE FORCE.
L-No married nau will be enlisted, and no married quarters will be provided until after promotion to rank of Sergeant. On attaining the rauk of Sergeant, Officers, whether married or namarried, will be required to contribute 4 per cent. of their salaries to the Widows' and Orphans' Pension Fund.
II.--The pay is £100 rising by triennial increments of £10 to £120 per aunum.
Note. For purposes of local payment 80% of this salary will be converted into dollars at the rate of 1/9, and the remainder at what will approximately be the average Hong Kong demand rate
from the 15th of the preceding month to the 15th of the mouth for which salary is to be paid, In
fixing the rate no fraction less than a farthing will be calculated.
III--Full pay will be drawn from the date of embarkation.
IV-A bounty of £15 will be paid on enlistment.
V.-Each Officer is allowed to remit home, through the Government, any sum not exceeding his half-pay, but only at the market rate of exchange.
VI. The engagement will be for five years only. Subject to the approval of the Captain Superintendent of Police and the Principal Civil Medical Officer a Constable can re-engage for a further term of five years.
VII-At the expiration of each of these terms of five years' service he becomes entitled to a second class return passage.
(a) And he can apply through the Captain Superintendent of Police for permission to return to the service within a period not exceeding nine months.
(5) Should this application be approved, he will receive half-pay during his absence, and a return passage to the Colony.
(r) On his return he shall be reinstated in his relative position in the Force.
VIII. Should he not take leave but remain in the Colony at the expiration of each or either of these two terms of five years' service, he will receive a sum equal to three months' pay of his substantive rank by way of bonus.
IX. Should he be allowed to continue in the Force on the completion of his second term of service, he may, on his final retirement, be allowed a pension according to regulations from time to time issued by the Colonial Government with the approval of the Secretary of State. Under the regulations recently issued, no pension will be granted for less than fifteen years' service, uor until the Officer has reached the age of 40 years, except in the case of retirement on the ground of ill-health.

X-Should a Constable be compelled to retire through ill-health before ten yeare, a gratuity
of one month's pay for each year's service may be granted.
XI-On joining the service each man has to provide himself with a uniform box, the cost of which is $5.
XII--The hours of duty are such as the Captain Superintendent of Police way direct. They vary but in the majority of cases do not exceed 8 hours in the 24 for Water Polico, and 6 hours in
the 24 for Land Police.
XIII. He will have to attend School for one hour each day, four days, weekly, until he obtains
s Certificate of Competency, without which he cannot obtain promotion in the Force.
XIV. Police officers in charge of Stations in certain Rural Districts are required to perform
in addition to their police duties, duties for the Sanitary Department, Harbour Department and Land Office without extra remuneration.
XV. He will also be required to attend drill for half an hour three or four days a week until he is passed as efficient.
XVI. Each Constablu (European) is provided with free quarters, fuel and light.
XVII-The following are also provided free:
Beds and bedding, summer and winter clothing, helmets, great conta, and boots, or money
in lieu thereof.
XVIII. He is provided with table linen, outlery, glass, crookery ware and cooking utensils for the sum of $5 entrance fee.
XIX. He is provided with Medical Attendance froe. If absent from duty in hospital through sickness from climate or ordinary causes the following stoppages are made :-

If, however, his sickness is certified to be the result of his own indiscretion, half-pay only will be allowed during the whole time of his absence from duty.

To be not less than 18 and not more than 25 years of age.
Minimum height 5 ft. 8 ins., chest measurement 3 ins. for 5 ft. 8 ius. (increasing
proportionately).
