Sir,
ad my
With reference to your letter No. 18706 of the
15th ultimo, relative to arrangements for working the
Wireless Telegraphy Station at Cape d'Aguilar, I am
commanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to
acquaint you, for the information of the Secretary of
State for the Colonies, that as regards paragraph 3 of
your letter, it is proposed that the crew of the Station
should consist of one Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist
in charge, and eight other Telegraphist ratings, and
in addition an Engine Room Artificer and a Stoker 1st
class. It is considered that this staff will be
adequate, the complement being similar to that at the
Naval 600 mile Stations.
2.- With reference to paragraphs 4 and 5 of Messrs.
Preece, Cardew and Snell's letter, of which a copy was
enclosed in your letter under reply, I am to state that great attention is paid to the instruction of Naval operators in over-reading signals through atmospheric
and other disturbances, and, while the higher ratings are extremely expert, even the junior ratings are consi- dered to be superior in this respect to the average
operator in the Mercantile Marine.
3.- With reference to the test of the Station, I
an to transmit herewith a copy of a letter of even date
addressed to the Commander in Chief, China.
4.- I am at the same time to enquire by what date
the erection of the Station will be completed, in order that the necessary arrangements may be made for
e Under Secretary of State.
