I, REIF of Vigar Lane in the City of Bradford in the County of York in England, Kerchant and Exporter, a British Subject trading under the style or name of "Bume & Reif" and the sole owner of the business carried on at Bradford aforesaid and th branch businesses carried on at Hamburg, Bombay, Rangoon and other places as a British Firm under the style or name of "Bu & Reif" DO HEREBY APPOINT my Agent, Hermann Feimann now residu at Hong Kong to be my Attorney for me and in my name or in t name of Bume & Reif or otherwise and on my behalf in Hảng Koz and all parts of the Chinese Empire to do all or any of the a matters and things hereinafter mentioned,

On the other hand we wish you to know that owing to the un- fortunate war we have got into an intolerable position. To begin with Mr. Sume at the outbreak of the war had ready cash securities or on account current about £34,000. At that time it could not have been foreseen that there would be war between England and Germany. Since war however was declared it was impossible and it is impossible to-day to get into communication with Mr. Bume. Koreover as you know it is treason to remit, and this no doubt will also be the case on the other side.

Writer has seen the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation only last week and although we negotiate through them for India and China they refuse to do business for Hongkong because as ir, Jones tells us - our firm there is aegistered as an Austrian firm, This as we said to Ir. Jones was new to us. We were not aware that we ever have been registered and certainly not as an Austriari firm. Our firm is British Has been established here in 1894 and writer himself is a British subject.
