CONFIDENTIAL
sir.

RECE
REa 28 EC14
GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 20th November, 1914.
466
I have the honour to transmit the enclosed copy of correspondence with the General Officer Commanding concerning the cost of maintenance of the wives and families of prisoners of war,
2.
With the exception of rs. Nagel these women are all wives of residents in the Colony who were recently made prisoners of war owing to the fact that by the calling out of the Landsturn they bad become liable to military service.
3.
Miss Peterson is the daughter of Mrs. Uschmann. Her case is under consideration as she has a sister in the Colony who
may be willing to support her.
4.
I am of opinion that the rest of the women and
children should be maintained either by the Imperial Government or
by the Colony, and if you approve I am prepared to ask the Legislat-
ive Council to vote the money necessary for their maintenance by the
Colony. Mrs. Berblinger is the only wife of a Head of a firm and it
is doubtful whether that firm when wound up will be solvent.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most obedient,
humble servant,
Homay
Governor,&c.
