Miscellaneous. It is hoped that the sum provided for

the Typhoon Refuge at Mongkoktsui will be sufficient to complete the work. The total cost would then be $2,172,000 as against the revised estimate of 82,301,600.

Water Works.

A sum of £18,000 has been entered for an additional filter bed in Kowloon. The filtration of water in this district is at present effected by three filter beds which, when working under favourable circumstances, are capable of pass- ing a quantity just equal to the daily consumption. Consequently when one of the beds is being cleaned or is out of action for any other reason, the other two beds are not sufficient to supply the demand.

Item 75, Market at Tai

0, and item 76, Tai Po quarters, are revotes, it having been found not possible to proceed with these works during the current year. The excess of $1,500 on the original estimate for the latter work is due to extensions not included in the original estimate.

A sum of £5,000 has been provided for commencing the erection of a Police Station at Ta Ku Ling, which is estimat-! ed to cost $20,000. Ta Ku Ling is in an isolated position on the borders of the New Territories and controls an important main road leading from Chinese into British territory. The existing station is an improvised Chinese building which is neither suitable nor easily defended in the event of attack.

Communications. The increase of $1,600 on the original estimate for the extension of the road at Castle Peak Bay and the construction of a pier is accounted for by the fact that the lowest tender received was by this amount in excess of the departmental estimate.
