Sir Kai was a man of frugal habits and his financial
difficulties are due to a limited income and the support of 273 large family. To show that he had always been leading a struggling existence I cannot do better than give Your Excellency a short history of how he kept himself and family for the last 20 years.
On his return from England (1882) Sir Kai found his father's estate was very much involved through mismanagement of the Trustees. After some trouble he succeeded in straightening the affairs of the estate. He was entitled to about $20.000 as his share in the estate. Drawing his share of the income from the estate together with what he made in his profession he was then comfortably well off. After the death of his first wife in 1884 be sent his eldest daughter to England, to be taken care of by her maternal uncle Mr.Walkden, and settled on heevery thing belonging to his wife which he was entitled to as tenant by courtesy. He also spent all his private savings for the establishment of the Alice Memorial Hospital in memory of his late wife.
In 1896 his trouble really began. His brother Ho Tim became insolvent through speculation on hause property. In order to save the family property being wasted by forced sales and to assist his brother in settling up his affairs he had to take over
the Tsung Hing Theatre which was in a dilapidated condition and was closed by order of the Government. He borrowed $50,000 in order to have the whole theatre rebuilt. Much pressure was brought on him for the redemption of this property when the mortgage fall due: in the following year. He had then a most worrying time and in consequence of which and through the persuasion of Dr.Fu Ting Fang he accepted the appointment as adviser to Sheng Shuen Vai of Shanghai at a salary of Tle.500 per month. However he only remained at Shanghai for two months and resigned his position when he found that it was incompatible to his honour and integrity to keep on such a position. He received only two months' salary out of which he had to defray for outfit and travelling expenses.
