NEW LAW COURTS.
I have been requested by the Hon. Director of Public Works
to answer your letter of the 14th ultimo addressed to him and
I have the honour to reply.
I regret the delay, but my time has been fully occupied in placing matters on a proper basis in order to complete the
building.
Now that matters have eventually reached the inevitable crisis in connection with the continued and vexatious delay, I propose to briefly relate the history of the building as far as I am concerned in the erection of the superstructure
well as fittings. eto.

Three separate contracts have been entered into, as follows:
(1) Construction of Foundations (ii) Beection of Superstructure (iii)Fittings, plaster work etc:
FOUNDATIONS......
A Contract for the foundations was entered into with r.
Hop Hing on the 19th July 1900, the amount being $77,919.24 and the work was completed during April 1903 at a cost of
$85,397.81
I wish to state that I was not in any way connected with
this work until nearing completion.
SUPERSTRUCTURE.
The contract for this work was signed by Mr. Chan A Tong on the 16th July 1903, the amount being 486,191,29. Certain extra work has been ordered from time to time, consisting of alterations to Library, Fitnesses -rooms etc; which brings the amount to say, $504,000. from whichsum must be deducted the value of bricks paid for by the Government (say for this con-
