I beg to inform you that the news of the retirement of

the Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements having been followed by

the report that our Attorney General, the Hon. Mr. Bucknill has, or

probably will be, offered the position recently held by Sir W.H.

Hyndman Jones has naturally attracted considerable attention in the

Colony.

The Un-official Mumbers of the Executive and Legisla-

tive Councils hold a meeting this afternoon to consider the question

and are unanimously of opinion that it would be in the best interests

of the Colony were Mr. Gompertz our Acting Chief Justice given the

substantive appointment of Attorney General while Mr. Kemp might well

be created Pulane Judge.

Both these officials are well known and highly res-

pected in this Colony and we believe have made their mark in the

Government service to the satisfaction of their seniors.

We therefore venture to put their names before you and

trust that Your Excellency will see your way to telegraphing to the

Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonies on our be-

half urging these appointments be made should, as we understand, the

post of Attorney General be now,or shortly become, vacant.

The meeting of the Un-official Members consisted of

myself, Mr.Wei Yuk, Mr.Pollock, Mr.Hewett, Mr.Landale and Mr.Lau Chu

Pak. Mr.Shellim being provouted from attending by illness.

We trust Your Excellency will be good enough to accede

to our request and support our recommendation.

I would add that as time presses the Un-official

Members requested me and Mr.Hewett to put their views before you

with the least possible delay and we would beg to suggest that should

Your Excellency agree to telegraph to London the message might be

despatched this afternoon.

I have, etc.

Sd.

C. P. Chater

His Excellency

Sir F. H. May, K.C.M.G.,

Governor of Hongkong.

Sd. Edpert A. Hewett.
