Eastern Department.
Mhaffen.
Captain Wetherell called on me today and made quite a favourable impression. I am sorry for him and only wish that we could do something to help him, but I explained to him that at his age it is impossible to consider him for either the Uganda or Niger Marine and that I feared that he would have very little chance for a Harbour Mastership in view of the large number of better qualified candidates on the lists. I promised that we would mention
his name to the Crown Agents and he is going to call again in about a month's time in the hope of having an interview with them then. In the meantime is
there any objection to the papers being shown to the Crown Agents? I should think that he might do admirably for a job as a skipper of a tug or master, He is going to send in his name to the Admiralty but I doubt whether they will be able to do anything for him in view of his age and the fact
that he is not a R.N.R.man.
