In continuation of my Despatch No. 112 of the 3rd. of April, I have the honour to transmit for your information copy of further correspondence with the Commissioner of Customs,

Kowloon and District, regarding the question of the payment of fees by the British Section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway for extra work performed by the Customs Staff.

A reference to the German text shows that in

the 3rd. paragraph of the Colonial Secretary's letter of the 17th.

of March copy of which accompanied my Despatch under reference, the

goods examined free of charge by night are small goods carried by

passenger trains.

At Tsingtau goods carried by freight trains can

only be examined by the Customs Staff between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The luggage carried by Chinese railway passeng- -ers in China varies but little, as far as I am aware, in quantity

and character.

It is estimated that if the proposals of the

Chinese Customs Administration were entertained, an expenditure, on

the basis of existing traffic, of 843,000 per annum would be en- -tailed for Customs examination at Kowloon on Sundays, Customs Holidays, at night and out of regular working hours which are from
