It is in these circumstances necessary to devise some other means to economise in the expenditure on Nursing

Staff of the Hospitals and I am considering the question of

training Chinese dressers, who may be able to do much of the

work especially in native male wards at present allotted to

European Sisters.

This innovation will, however, take time to

inaugurate and in the meantime I have no alternative but to ask

your sanction to increase the staff of sisters as proposed as

soon as possible; and in anticipation of your approval I have

already engaged one trained European Nurse locally for three

months to do duty solely in the Maternity Hospital. A great

part of the extra cost this year will be covered by lapsing

salaries in the department. I would also ask your approval of

the increased salaries for Probationers as from the date of your

approval of the proposal.

7.

I would mention that the question of increasing

the European Nursing Staff was brought forward by un-official

members at the time the Estimates for this year were under con-

sideration and that recently questions thereon have been asked

in Legislative Council.
