sir,

I have the honour se inform you that Mr H«H»Gompertz,

Pulsne Judge and at present acting Chief Justice has

asked me to recommend him to you for the appointment of

Attorney General in this Colony should the post become

vasant in the near future.

2.

I have informed Mr Gompertz that I would suberi t

his name with those of other sandidates for your consideration

in the event of the appointment becoming vaoant,

contingency which I told him I had me reason to anticipate,

but that I was unable to recommend him to the exclusion

of others.

3.

In my confidential despatch of the 27th of Feb: I forwarded my very favourable repert on Me Gompertz's qualifications for the higher legal appointments, I had in my mind judicial appointments rather than the Attorney Generalship for which Mr Gompertz is not in my miksi opinion so well fitted as are others in this Colony, though he would fit I have no doubt fill the pest creditably.

My view is, however, that he makes a better judge than he would make an attorney General.
