As only three of these Masters are required, I propose to dispense with the services of Mr. Williams and to give the other three a salary of £250 a year for three years on probation. At the end of that period, if their services are retained, they would be placed on the permanent staff and draw salary at the same rate as other Assistant Masters in the Government Service, namely, £300 rising to £550. The increase of fees and introduction of an entrance Tamination in the Chinese language are expected to cause a considerable decrease in the numbers at present attending the

school.
