GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 18th. May, 1914.

I have the honour to inform you that I have

recently had under consideration an offer made by Mr. Ellis

Kadoorie, on behalf of the Ellis Kadoorie Schools Society, to

transfer to this Government the Ellis Kadoorie School in Hongkong

including the lands and buildings, on the following conditions:-

(a). That the school shall continue to be known as "The

Ellis Kadoorie College".

(b). That the school shall be solely for Chinese boys.

(c). That the same standard shall be maintained in the

school as at present, and that the fees charged to scholars

shall be moderate.

(d). Mr. Kadoorie would be glad if a small Committee of Chinese could be appointed to help the Director of Education in managing the school.

(e). That the Government would be willing to lend the school hall occasionally, as has been done in the past, during the holidays to Chinese for meetings or functions.

2. The Ellis Kadoorie School, Hongkong, is one of several schools which Mr. Kadoorie has founded; others being in Canton and Shanghai. It was opened in the year 1901, and was housed in the building owned by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce free of rent. The building has been added to from time to time at a total cost of about $150,000, of which Mr. Kadoorie found the greater
