will be required, and be allowed reasonable facilities for the careful supervision of the repairs carried out. In this Colony violent raine and the ravages of white ants necessarily involve a great deal of work in connection with keeping reads and build- -ings in good order, while typhoons such as those of 1906 and 1908 practically double the work of the maintenance staff for several
months.
6.
Summary
Having dealt in detail with the various points referred to me I may summarise my conclusions as follows:-
I. The Engineering Staff is fully occupied and cannot be reduced unless the work to be done according to the estimates is
reduced.
II. The Survey Staff is dealing efficiently with the work in hand and is gradually overtaking arrears. A triangulation of the Island is essential but cannot yet be undertaken by the existing
staff.
III.
IV.
The Overseer Staff is barely adequate.
The annual expenditure on maintenance of Buildings and
Roads cannot be reduced.
