T. Regarding Colonel Dumbleton's comments on the manner of framing the Estimates for Maintenance of Buildings, the Director of Public Works informs us that in framing the Estimate for 1909 he had before him the expenditure for the past 5 years. Colonel Dumbleton is of opinion that if such period is taken the Estimates will be too low and that a period of three years is

safer.

In reply to our question the Director of Public Works expressed the opinion that he considered the expenditure on maintenance of roads was moderate. He added that he would wish

to have an additional Overseer for this work.

We recommend that on the retirement of Mr. Mugford effect be given to the suggestion in paragraph 16 of Mr. Chatham's report and that an additional Overseen of Roads be appointed.

The Committee have examined the items of expenditure

under this Sub-head during 1908.

Nearly all the items are not in the nature of works but include charges for Travelling expenses, Launch hire, Lighting, Stationery, Drawing materials and instruments, etc., which should be incuded in the 'Other Chargaa' votes of the Public Works De-

-partment.

The Committee recommend that this sub-head be abolis -hed and that the items be distributed to Departmental Votes.
