beach, at the toe of the slope, should be excavated as far outwards from the bank as may be necessary, and the area excavated should then be filled in with a layer of large rubble stone.

(ii). Where the existing pitching is composed of stones containing less than, say, 4 cubic feet, an additional layer of pitching should be laid on top of it, composed of stones containing not less than 6 cubic feet.

(iii). The pitching on all earth banks should be extended up to the toe of such banks, the additional pit ching to consist of stones containing not less than 4 cubic feet, laid on a bed of rubble not less than 1 foot in thickness.

(iv). The joints of all pitching to be filled in with 3 to 1 cement mortar.

(v). Between the 10 and 11† miles, where the banks are exposed to the greatest fetch of sea, it would be prudent to add a layer of heavier pitching, than that specified above and also to face the top and slope of the berm with heavier stone.

5. I enclose a drawing on which the above proposals are indicated.

6. I anticipate that the works enumerated above should prevent further damage, but, in the event of any further damage being caused to the banks by typhoons, it would be advisable, in effecting repairs, to utilize rubble stone as much as possible.

1.

The only other works in connection with the railway

which were seriously damaged by the typhoon were:-

(a). The pier at Tai Po.

(b). The unprotected earth bank of the railway between

8.

8 and 9 miles, where the public road runs between the railway and Tide Cove.

(a). Taipo Pier. I recommend that some additional

*pierre perdu" be deposited along the toe of the pitched slope on

the south-east side of the pier, that some n additional "pierre

perdu" be also deposited along the north-west side of the pier,
