Enclosure 2.

508

Extract from the linutes of the Executive Council dated

26th. February, 1914.

"Council considered an application by the linnager of the Mercantile Bank of India, Ltd., with regard to the conditions of the security against the note issue. Ilia Excellency stated that the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury discouraged other than Government note issues, but the time was not yet ripe for a Government issue and a larger supply of notes was undoubtedly required in the interests of the trade of the Colony. Council

concurred that a recommendation should be made to the effect that

a concession should be granted to the Mercantile Bank on the lines

of those granted to the Hongkong and Shanghai and Chartered

Banks."
