borrowed money either from our friends or our wives or on mortgage.
Being our own landlords we have to pay Crown Rent, taxes, fire insurance and lighting, and we have to keep our houses in repair: in addition to all this wo have (most of us) to pay interest on our Mortgages, and to scrape and save in order to pay back the money we have borrowed.
While wo do not wish to appear boastful wo submit that our foresight, energy and enterprise should not be discouraged by
the Government.
As it is, we are put at a disadvantage as compared with our brother officers, who have perhaps not been so careful of their resourece or have lacked enterprise,
By providing our own quarters we have saved the Government the expense of providing quarters for us, and being our own landlords we have a stake and interest in the Colony, which, if we are fairly treated, should render us more painstaking in performing the duties of our orrices.
9. We submit that on all grounds the money which has been
voted for us should be paid to us, and we humbly ask that His
Excellency will give this matter his favourable consideration.
We have the honour to bo,
!
