to my approaching them on the matter. He permitted me to do the necessary. I interviewed the petitioners on several occasions and the result was, that I discovered further properties alleged to belong to the deceased on which the petitioners offered to pay probate duty, in spite of the fact that they contended that the properties did not form part of the estate of the deceased. That they would pay the probate duty thereon as their position in the commercial circle would not permit them to fight it out with the Government in Court. The Government would have got about $20,000 by way of further probate duty and interest thereon but the Registrar instead of following the usual practice of accepting the probate duty instituted perjury proceedings against the petition- wers. The Honourable the Colonial Treasurer would, I think, re- -member that in his time as Deputy Registrar and Appraiser he often got the value of the properties in the petitions increased and added further properties not disclosed by petitioners and charged probate duty thereon and interest, where payable, but never instituted legal proceedings against any petitioner. He would probably remember the case in which he got further properti- -as added and which increased the amount of probate duty payable in the matter by about 840,000.

As soon as the Summons was served the petitioners they called to see me in the Registry and said to me "what have you done". I replied "nothing". They then snowed me the the Sumone to my surprise. I at once went and saw Mr. McElderry and asked him to have the summons withdrawn or else my credit with friends as a friend would be ruined. That I could not see the Government my employers lose anything properly entitled to and that as such servant I had done my duty. That I did not act in the matter to deceive my friends as a friend and to let them in for perjury proceedings. That I had told him before taking this responsibility that I would not like to be exposed in the matter. He promised to speak to r. Nisbet abut it as the Sun ons was in his name. A few

days later I saw him and he abhind told me that he had seen Kr. Nisbet, but he would not agree. He told me that he had conveyed
