the body of the book: this probate register, I cannot say if it was used as a chit-book: it was never to my knowledge used as such; it is not a book of record. (The book should be produced).
If the book was out and a probate came in the entry would have
to wait till the book came back; the fees would have to go on to
the fee clerk and would be entered in the fee-book without a
number
-
I cannot say without looking at the fee-book.
The Auditors as far as I know base their audit on the numbers but they do not form an exhaustive basis for a satisfactory basis. The final probate numbers showed that the matter was completed: and these were never entered up until the affair was completed: and the fact that the Cpurt fees were not affixed should not prevent it from receiving a number: The Court fees ought to have been affixed before the grant was made: and in practice before signing the grant I should have the file in front of me. Any one bringing you a grant and the file was unstamped would be laying himself open to be called on to show where the stamps were. On June 30th, or before I might have discovered all I did subsequentl; if I had had any cruse to make similar enquiries.
I rather think on June 30th. I told you I would go through your work with you that afternoon. You came and said you were ready. I was too busy to do so. I did not check. I had no appoint- -ment: my impression is that I was busy. I had no intention of making an elaborate check. I don't know if I took the Printers and Publishers registers into my office on that day. I don't know if there was anything owing on them by you: I don't remember any conversation: I don't remember anything about money due on Chine Mail and Overland route. I do remember something about one
atau but what it was I dont' know.
